International Directory of Stock Exchanges
According to the Guinness Book of World Records the oldest Stock Exchange in the world is the Amsterdam Stock Exchange formed over 400 years ago in 1602. It was founded to deal in shares of the Dutch East India Company.
Depending on your definition of Stock Exchange other exchanges were formed before the Amsterdam Stock Exchange and these include the Antwerp Bourse in 1460, the Lyons Bourse in 1506, the Toulouse Bourse in 1549, the Hamburg Bourse in 1558 and the London Royal Exchange in 1571.
The London Stock Exchange traces its history back to 1698 when John Castaing began issuing a list of stock and commodity prices in Jonathan's coffee house called "The Course of the Exchange and other things."
In the United States the Philadelphia Stock Exchange was founded in 1790 and the New York Stock Exchange traces its roots back to 1792 when the Buttonwood Agreement was signed by NYC stockbrokers and merchants.
